I've got to admit that I'm personally fascinated by the superb talent at Cisco. So when a distinguished alumnus of Cisco creates a new business, well, you can be sure I'll be spotlighting it here on BradReese.Com, for example:

The First Tracks - SDN Research and Analysis

Mark LearyCiscoFormer Cisco senior strategist, Mark Leary, has launched the New Hampshire based software-defined networking advisory service, The First Tracks.

An 11-year Cisco veteran, he joined Cisco upon its May 5, 2000 acquisition of content switching platform vendor, ArrowPoint Communications, for $5.7 billion in Cisco stock (view his biography).

In my opinion, Leary authored some of the best Cisco blog stories. One of my favorites was the Top Ten IOS Services You Should Be Using Now!

Gartner Cool Vendor 2012First Tracks' advisory service is focused on software-defined networking:

"Where the network adapts without intervention, repairs without interruption, protects without instruction, and, most importantly, delivers maximum value without continual and costly investment."

Planned vendor profiles include Nicira, Big Switch Networks and Embrane.

"Software-defined networking (SDN) offers network operators a way to break the cycle of constant and costly hardware upgrades."

"Why is SDN the answer...? It comes down to the following five network advancements that determine the success of SDN - and SDN solutions."
